The wheel of life is a diagnostic and visualization tool used in coaching. It represents the different areas of life (work, finances, health, romantic relationships, family, friends, personal growth, leisure) as segments of a circle. The client rates their satisfaction in each area from 0 to 10. The tool helps identify imbalances and set priorities for action. It is often the first step in a coaching process.
In practice, the exercise involves rating your satisfaction from 0 to 10 in each life area, then connecting those points to visualize a more or less round "wheel." A lopsided wheel (excellent at work, terrible on health) visually reveals an imbalance you may have vaguely sensed but never seen this clearly before.
A client rates 9/10 in career but 2/10 in romantic relationships and 3/10 in health. Seeing his wheel heavily skewed to one side, he concretely realizes that his massive investment in work comes at the cost of an imbalance he'd never measured this visually before.
The wheel of life is not a comparison tool against others: scores are purely subjective and personal, a 6/10 satisfaction can be perfectly sufficient for one person and unsatisfying for another.
No, the goal isn't uniform perfection but overall balance and awareness of current priorities. A balanced 6-7/10 everywhere is often healthier than a 10/10 in one area at the cost of others.
Every 3 to 6 months is a good rhythm to track progress, and redoing it more often risks over-analyzing rather than acting on the identified priorities.
Pick 1 or 2 priority areas to work on rather than trying to improve every weak area at once, which spreads energy and attention thin.
