Eye contact is the fastest channel of nonverbal communication. In less than a second, gaze direction, duration, and quality reveal what words often conceal. Understanding eye contact patterns gives you a reliable decoder for conversations, negotiations, and relationships.

Gaze direction and meaning

Up and to the left: accessing a visual memory. They are recalling something they actually saw. This is generally associated with truthful recollection.

Up and to the right: constructing a visual image. They are imagining something, which can mean creativity or fabrication depending on context.

Down and to the left: internal dialogue. They are talking to themselves, processing a thought or decision.

Down and to the right: accessing feelings. This gaze often appears when someone is processing an emotional memory or physical sensation.

Duration tells a story

Normal conversational eye contact lasts about 3 to 5 seconds before a natural break. Holding gaze longer than 5 seconds without looking away signals either strong interest (attraction, engagement) or dominance (intimidation, challenge).

Avoiding eye contact entirely can signal shame, anxiety, disinterest, or cultural norms. The key is not the avoidance itself but the change. If someone who normally holds eye contact suddenly cannot meet your gaze, something has shifted.

The triangle pattern

In professional conversations, gaze naturally moves in a triangle between the eyes and forehead. In personal or intimate settings, the triangle drops to the eyes and mouth. If someone's gaze keeps dropping to your lips during a business conversation, the context has shifted in their mind.

Pupil dilation

Pupils dilate with interest and arousal, and constrict with discomfort or aversion. This is completely involuntary and very difficult to fake. In low-light conditions, everyone's pupils dilate, so the signal is most reliable in well-lit environments.

Practical application

Pick one eye contact pattern to watch for this week. Start with gaze breaks: notice when people look away during conversation and what they were saying at that moment. The avoidance often marks the most important part of the conversation, the part they are least comfortable with.
